Coaching at Interlochen Center for the Arts

I had the pleasure of working with students at Interlochen Center for the Arts today.  What a dedicated, talented group of young players!  Thank you to Keith Aleo for having me – it was a treat to work with the students as they prepare to perform Steve Reich’s “Drumming” this fall, and working with a couple of students in their private lessons was especially enjoyable!

Clinic at Montana State University

I had a fantastic session with percussionists at Montana State University presenting on memorization and strategies for deeper learning!  Thanks to Stephen Versaevel for hosting and to the students for their engagement and enthusiasm!

Working with Students at Central Washington University

I had the privilege of working with students in the Central Washington University Drumline as they gear up to begin the fall quarter.  Thanks to Professor Lewis Norfleet, Director of Bands, and Mark Goodenberger, Director of Percussion Studies, for having me!  In this program, the entire percussion studio (all 22 members) perform together in the drumline in the fall.  What a great way to build community!

International Percussion Institute 2017

A hearty thank you to Dr. Mark Ramirez for inviting me to serve as a faculty member again this year at the International Percussion Institute in Aberdeen, Scotland.  Once again, it was a profound experience to cross cultural boundaries, interact with students and faculty from around the world, and promote artistry through our varied yet shared musical outlets.  A special thanks to the rest of the IPI faculty – Mark Ramirez, Lisa Nicol, Thomas Burritt, and Jonathan Ovalle – for their artistic depth, knowledge, friendship and willingness to share their talents with all those involved.

We have some big plans in store for version 3.0 of the IPI, and I’m already looking forward to 2018!

The Body of the Moon World Premiere Broadcast

It was my pleasure to join Nancy Ives, Principal Cellist of the Oregon Symphony, vocalist Erick Valle, and the Resonance Ensemble to record Desmond Earley’s new piece The Body of the Moon, commissioned by All-Classical 89.9 in Portland, Oregon for the total solar eclipse this August, and which premiered at the moment of totality during the eclipse.  Bravo to Desmond for his wonderful piece and to my colleagues on their beautiful musicianship!

Makrokosmos Project 3: Reichmokosmos

A huge thanks to DUO Stephanie and Saar for inviting the Portland Percussion Group to join them for the third installment of their one-day summer contemporary music festival: Makrokosmos Project.  It was a fantastic event at the Vestas Center in downtown Portland, and a wonderful venue for bringing a concert of contemporary music to Portland.  Amid selections for piano solo, duo, sextet, and a piano and violin duo, we were fortunate to perform the music of Steve Reich, Paul Lansky, and Portland’s Michael Johanson.  Our repertoire included:

Drumming, Part 1 by Steve Reich
Clapping Music by Steve Reich
Textures by Paul Lansky
Grooves and Diversions by Michael Johanson (written for the PPG)

Thank you to Stephanie and Saar for such an enriching musical experience and I’m looking forward to future collaborations!

CeLOUbration!

It was a real pleasure performing as part of the Portland Percussion Group as part of the Lou Harrison Centennial concert, “CeLOUbration,” held at Portland State University.  Thanks to Brett Campbell and all of the organizers of the event for asking us to be involved!
