Christopher Whyte (b. 1983) captivates audiences with his dynamic artistry as a percussionist, timpanist, collaborator, composer, and educator. Recognized as “hypnotic” and “enthralling” by Oregon ArtsWatch, he has presented recitals, concerts, and masterclasses worldwide throughout Asia, Europe, Canada, and the United States.
In 2023, Whyte launched his debut solo album, cold stability, through New Focus Recordings to critical acclaim. The album features his electroacoustic composition “A Cold Stability,” which he has showcased nationally and internationally, including at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention. Currently, he is engaged in the development of With Her Own Wings, a concert-length production in collaboration with visual artist Taravat Talepasand. This project, set to premiere in 2026, highlights compositions by Iranian-American composers Anahita Abbasi, Niloufar Nourbakhsh, and Aida Shirazi, incorporating electroacoustic solo percussion with visual art, film, and light. With Her Own Wings was the winner of the Oregon Community Foundation’s Creative Heights Award in 2024.
As a founding member of the Portland Percussion Group, he strives to foster percussion performance through engaging concerts and collaborations. In 2020, the group made its European debut at the GAIDA Festival of Contemporary Music in Vilnius, Lithuania, collaborating with the Colin Currie Quartet on Steve Reich’s Drumming. More recently, they premiered Alejandro Viñao’s epic Patterns and Form, supported by an international consortium of 21 institutions. They will perform this work at the 50th Anniversary Percussive Arts Society International Convention in 2025.
Whyte also performs as the percussionist with Third Angle New Music, advancing contemporary music through performance and collaborations with composers. He has worked closely with composers Alejandro Viñao, Molly Joyce, Gabriela Lena Frank, Pauline Oliveros, Sarah Hennies, Angélica Negrón, and Mendel Lee, and loves the collaborative nature of developing new music. He most recently appeared as concerto soloist with the Missoula Symphony, performing Pascal Le Boeuf’s Triple Concerto, and has performed with arx duo in performances of Dominic Murcott’s Harmonic Canon.
He regularly performs with the Oregon Symphony, including on their Grammy-nominated recordings Spirit of the American Range and Aspects of America: the Pulitzer Edition, as well as with the Portland Opera Orchestra, Oregon Ballet Theater, 45th Parallel Music, fEARnoMusic, The Bach Cantata Choir, Portland Symphonic Choir, and the Portland Gay Men’s Chorus.
An accomplished and dedicated educator, Whyte serves as Assistant Professor of Music and Percussion Area Coordinator at Portland State University where he oversees all aspects of the percussion program and directs the Portland Summer Percussion Academy. He formerly taught at Western Oregon University and actively participates in the Percussive Arts Society, currently serving as President of its Oregon Chapter.
Whyte holds degrees from the University of Oregon (B.M., M.M.) and Boston University (D.M.A.) as a student of Charles Dowd and Timothy Genis. As a Yamaha Performing Artist, he endorses Vic Firth Drumsticks, Remo Drum Heads, Zildjian Cymbals, and Black Swamp Percussion Instruments. His compositions are published with Tapspace, MSC, Matrix, and Bachovich Publishing.
